From its beginnings as a custom furniture company, Kent & London (K & L) has expanded into a dynamic interior design studio and build company based in London’s vibrant Shoreditch. Here Luke Ellis, founder of K & L, talks interior design.

With a passion for luxurious craftsmanship and an eye for attention to detail, Luke set up K & L in 2009 to produce custom furniture pieces. The firm has since grown into a team of talented designers, joiners, tradespeople and experienced project managers that offers an end-to-end interior service - from initial concepts right through to project build.

Predominantly providing house renovations as well as bathroom and kitchen redesigns across its namesake areas of Kent and London, the studio specialises in producing spaces that reflect homeowners’ styles and tastes. “Because most of our projects are private-residential, our inspiration must first come from the client” says Luke. “We are creating someone's forever home, which means the design must be tailored to the specific needs of the client, while of course also injecting our extensive industry knowledge and fundamental understanding of excellent design. Sometimes it's a client's favourite artwork or a piece of furniture handed down through generations, but inspiration always starts from a personal place.” 

This approach is perfectly exemplified by a recent renovation project, where K & L transformed a newly purchased property into a warm family home, complete with a fun yet luxurious bathroom that allowed the interior design studio to showcase its creativity.

Speaking on the process behind creating interiors, Luke explains: “Once we’ve received the brief from the client, we start by researching styles, ideas and aesthetics. We filter through a range of possible outcomes and work closely with our clients to find something they love. With a clear vision in mind, we then work through scheme boards, layouts, visuals, technical plans and finer details. We always design with a budget in mind, but work through this with a fine toothed comb once we have sign-off on ‘the dream’. Exploring alternative options and finding inventive solutions is also a huge part of this process, as it's crucial that we deliver a design that's not only beautiful but achievable.”

Featuring contrasting colours and patterns alongside chunky terrazzo flooring, the alluring design is brought to life with the addition of Lusso fixtures and fittings, including the Thinn Wall Hung Stone Basin, and the Thermostatic Shower and Wall Mounted Basin Taps in an opulent brushed gold finish. Lusso features proudly across many of K & L’s projects, and is a favoured choice of the studio. “We've always loved the sleek design that is so recognisable in Lusso products” says Luke. “They work incredibly well with contemporary schemes, and are a very reasonable price point considering the premium look and feel.”
